The Sloan Collection is composed of photographic prints, slides and negatives taken primarily by Eugene B. Sloan and his wife Kathleen L. Sloan. Eugene B. Sloan worked as a journalist and photographer for The State newspaper and published several books including Scenic South Carolina and South Carolina: A Journalist and His State. Kathleen L. Sloan was also a photographer, writer and editor. The items in this collection span from approximately 1955 – 1985, covering a wide range of subjects. Most of the images are related to South Carolina, however, many images from Georgia, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Tennessee and several countries in Europe are included. Most of the photographs were taken by Eugene Sloan (EBS) or Kathleen “Kitty” Sloan (KLS). Other photographers whose work appears in this collection include: Jak Smyrl, Sloan family friend and artist/writer for The State newspaper, Tom Nebbia, photographer for National Geographic, and the Sloans’ daughters, Laura “Laurie” Lewis Sloan and Mary “Winnie” Lindsay Sloan (MLS).
