Clippings are newspaper, magazine, and other press articles from South Carolina, national, and international sources in which Senator Hollings' name appears in a significant manner. There are 19 linear feet of clippings (19 cartons) and 19 scrapbooks. A few clippings, 1952 to 54, shine a little light on his service as a state representative. Clippings from his eight years as lieutenant governor and governor, 1955 to 1963, are found throughout the general folders in the first 1 ½ cartons and in the topical files that make up the vast majority of the remainder of clippings. Clippings from his Senate career, 1966 to 2004, are the most ubiquitous.
The first 1 ½ cartons contain clippings of a general nature or articles covering more than one topic, arranged chronologically. The vast majority of the remainder of clippings relate to issues dealt with by Hollings during his years as lieutenant governor, governor, and senator, arranged alphabetically by topic. Topics covered heavily include: budget deficit, communications, textiles and trade, nuclear energy, foreign affairs, hunger issues of the late 1960s and 1970s, and Hurricane Hugo.
Four cartons hold clippings relating to Hollings' work with the Democratic Party and other Democratic candidates and his many campaigns for public office, starting with his 1954 campaign for lieutenant governor and continuing up to his last senatorial campaign in 1998 (his earliest campaigns in 1948, 1950, and 1952, all for membership in the South Carolina House, are not represented). Finally, half a carton relates to the Senator's family and personal life.
19 scrapbooks, each covering anywhere from a few months up to three years, contain clippings from 1966 to 1991 and cover a variety of topics. Scrapbooks with inclusive dates for each are listed below. For works authored by Senator Hollings, whether letters-to-the-editor, or newsletter, newspaper, and magazine articles, refer to the Press and Media Series.
