Military Committee

 Sub-Series
From the Series:

The Travel Files consist of 6.5 linear feet of material (7 cartons), documenting trips taken in 1966-89, 1993-97, and 2000-04. Files include photographs, letters, memos, maps, itineraries, research material, transcripts of audio recordings, and other ephemera from the Senator's travels.

Folders in this collection are organized chronologically according to dates of travel. Folders list the countries of destination and, when available, identify the senator leading the congressional delegation (CODEL). Finally, the folders indicate briefly the types of materials in the folder and their extent. Several folders contain material that was well organized within a notebook and the original order of these notebooks has been maintained and labeled "notebook." When a substantial amount of published materials such as books and government publications were associated with a particular trip, they were assembled within a single folder labeled "published material." The rest of the material not originally in notebook or published format was labeled "general."

Some of the more amusing items in the collection include Hollings' certificates attesting that he had crossed the Panama Canal and traveled to the South Pole in Antarctica. There is also an official document for his time on safari in Kenya's Masai Mara game park as well as military orientation materials for newly arrived soldiers in Vietnam. One folder covers World War II history on the 50th anniversary of Operation Overlord. Other materials include guide books and lists of useful words in multiple languages.
