League of Women Voters of Spartanburg Papers
This collection consists chiefly of administrative and program files, 1949-1960. Administrative files include bylaws, board minutes, financial records, and membership lists. Program files contain correspondence, reference and other material on local, state, and national program items. Of particular interest are files regarding the city budget, 1949-1953, foreign affairs, 1949-1960, jail and chain gang labor, 1950-1954 [which the League considered along with the Council for Spartanburg County, whose bylaws are present in this file], and loyalty-security, 1945-1955.

Founded in 1948, the Spartanburg (S.C.) league was disbanded during the spring of 1960, and reorganized circa 1974-1975. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
