Administrative history

The University of South Carolina Band was unofficially founded in 1920 when the Board of Trustees gave permission for a student-organized band to form. This largely informal organization continued until the 1950s, when the band first began to learn drills and travel to away games with the athletics teams. By the 1960s, the band had begun developing the formal structure that exists today, functioning as an official part of the university's music and athletics programs and performing regularly at athletic events as well as giving separate concerts. The tenure of James K. Copenhaver (1976 - present) continued this formalization, as he developed handbooks and teaching materials particularly for the band.

Arrangement note

The collection is arranged into five series:

I. Sheet Music II. Drill Charts III. Programs & Scripts IV. Correspondence & Notes V. Media

While these series provide the best intellectual representation of the contents of the Carolina Bands Collection, the physical arrangement of the materials is chronological. Sheet Music is the smallest series, with records from only four years (1992, 2001, 2003 and 2004). Drill Charts is the largest, with charts from every year through 2005. Programs & Scripts offer evidence of the band’s activities at both athletic events and in civic and concert performances. Correspondence & Notes give details of the band’s yearly activities, participants, policies and issues. Media offers photographs, sound recordings and newspaper clippings related to the band.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements note
