Abstract W.J. Bryan Dorn began his career in public service by representing Greenwood County in the S.C. House of Representatives, 1939-1940, and the S.C. Senate, 1941-1942. Abstract

This small collection consists of 75 photographs of public figures, including Speaker of the House Sol Blatt, state senator Edgar Brown, Governor Robert McNair, state senator James P. "Spot" Mozingo, and Governor John West. The photos were taken by Doug Mauldin, a South Carolina journalist and photographer who worked for The State, the Greenville News, and the Associated Press, frequently reporting on state government.

Charles D. Ravenel Papers

Abstract

In 1974, Charles D. Ravenel, a political newcomer, became the Democratic Party's nominee for governor, but a dispute over residency qualifications kept him off the general election ballot. Campaigns for the U.S. Senate in 1978 and for Congress in 1980 were also unsuccessful. However, Ravenel's innovative style and charismatic manner reinvigorated the political system, and his method of using the media as a campaign tool was a first for South Carolina and changed politics within the state.
