Harriet Keyserling, a Democrat and self-proclaimed "New York Jewish liberal," represented Beaufort County in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1977 until her retirement in 1993. During her legislative career and her service in numerous cultural organizations, Keyserling was a tireless advocate of the arts, of education, and of the protection of the environment from nuclear waste and other energy hazards.

Walt Lardner Collection

Abstract

Walt Lardner sold his first cartoon in 1954 while a student at the School of Visual Arts in New York. For the next decade, his free-lance cartoons appeared in national magazines such as Collier's and the Saturday Evening Post. In 1967, Lardner moved to South Carolina, where he began a long association with South Carolina Educational Television, eventually becoming the network's chief animator. During this period, he was also a regular, free-lance contributor to The State.

The League of Women Voters of Columbia/Richland County (S.C.) was organized as a provisional league in 1947, and recognized as a local league in 1950, one year after the recognition of the Charleston and Spartanburg leagues. These three local organizations formed the nucleus of the state League. The League is a non-partisan organization that encourages citizens to learn about and become active in national, state, and local government.

C. Bruce Littlejohn Papers

Abstract

Cameron Bruce Littlejohn represented Spartanburg County in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1937 to 1943 and 1947 to 1949, the latter three years as Speaker. He resigned in 1949 when he won a judicial appointment. For the next thirty-five years, Littlejohn served on South Carolina's Seventh Circuit Court and the South Carolina Supreme Court, attaining the post of Chief Justice in his last two years on the Court.
